Week 1 Winter Break: From Cross-Training to Movie Nights: A Week of Reflection

Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.” – Bruce Lee

Introduction:

What’s up folks! I hope that this past week treated you well. This week was the first week of being back home, and it was bland. I started working again at Hanson’s at the start of this break and it’s been fun. However, most of my time not spent at work has either been cross training or scrolling. Let’s dive into this week!

Work:

I started back at Hanson’s this week and got to work with some new people. I got to work with Nik who goes to davenport and is a mid-distance runner and is super fast. I also got to work with Ethyn who runs with Adam at Wayne state, the last new person I worked with was Matt who goes to Western Michigan (Boo. . .not him just the university). It was really awesome to work with all the new people along with some familiar faces as well. Unfortunately my manager was not in for most of the week but on Saturday I was able to work with him and catch up which made the shift go by super fast. But the person I was looking forward to working with the most was Coach Ford, aka the goat, aka Santa’s Claus. It was really good to be able to see how much better he had gotten at his job and I was glad to be able to work together again. I have more shifts this upcoming week and I look forward to them!

Cross Training:

On Monday I ran a 10 mile run and my piriformious started to hurt on the last 2 miles of the running. Hoping it was just a one day type of pain and tightness I ran 7 miles on Tuesday but the pain had gotten worse. So with that I decided I would cross train the rest of the week. I orginally started off by rowing but I had not done that in a while and got really tired fast and so I biked the rest of the minutes I had for Wednesday and Thursday. I had gotten pretty sick of the bike so I did the arc-trainer on Friday. I forgot how much cross training sucks. I have no issues doing a 60 minute run with no music or people but as soon as I try to do a 40 min bike or any other form of cross training I can not focus or stand doing whatever form of activity I am doing. I really realized that I took running for granted and realized how grateful I am to be able to run and not have pain or issues with it.

Pet Sitting:

Since my parents and Xuan Xuan were heading to Las Vegas this week for vacation, I got to take Addy, my sisters cat, home to pit sit her. She seems like a very shy cat at first although after getting comfortable with you she is super friendly and loves the attention. After we first got home she started to wander around the house and explore every nook and cranny. Afterwards she came up to Hong Xiang and mine bedroom and slept with us. It was super cute. One thing I found is that she loves to sit inside empty boxes and relax. I have enjoyed her company this past week and she is staying with us until Christmas so I am happy she gets to hang out with us!

Movie Night:

Jack (Front Left), Clay (Back Left), Michael (Front Right), and Luke (Back Right) playing Coup while The Mouse Trap is in the background.

After two years of our friend group saying that we should do a movie night but not actually committing to something, I finally decided that I would take initiative and plan it out. I was direct and it worked out well. So, on Friday night we had a movie night at my house, and it was a huge success. Surprisingly everyone in the group chat showed up, which has never happened before. We can most of the time Blame Horacio since he tends to cancel at the last minute or just does not show up. However, this time he showed up and even brought his brother Sam as well. We started off by talking with each other before then transitioning into playing Coup or watching it before I put on a movie which was called The Mouse Trap and was a horror movie about Mickey Mouse. It was awful and I do not recommend you watch it. While a couple of us were watching the movie most of the guys were playing brawl stars and having a blast! Overall, it was a very successful night, and I hope to be able to do it again!

Phone Usage:

When I am not at work, most of my time is spent at home, and while I may do other things like work on projects, cook, or just relax, a lot of my time has been spent on my phone. Today I was given the update of the weekly screen time usage, and it was an average of 4 hours per day which is nearly double what it normally is at school. I look down on this added time I spend on my phone because it is useless scrolling that has no benefit. Now sometimes scrolling is okay if done in moderation but I don’t want this to become a habit. So, I changed some things in my phone and added a couple more limits. Additionally, the added screen time this week has also caused a little bit more anxious and really made me realize that I am quite dependent on my phone. While I don’t want to completely cut off my phone, I have realized it is an issue and hope to be able to limit some of the useless scrolling I do these next couple of weeks.

Conclusion:

Overall, this week has been a mix of ups and downs, from adjusting back to work and cross training to realizing how much I rely on my phone. While some moments felt mundane, like the endless scrolling or dealing with cross-training fatigue, I also found some great moments of connection, like spending time with Addy and having a successful movie night with friends. Looking ahead, I’m excited for more shifts at work and hope to manage my phone usage better. It’s a reminder that even in the quiet moments, there’s always something to be thankful for, and every week brings new lessons.
